WHY IS NOT THE ADVERTISING OF GAMBLING PROHIBITED? Not that I am very much in favor of prohibiting as a generic solution to any problem, quite the contrary, but there are things that seem obvious, as it is that advertising campaigns encourage certain behaviors. So, why allow the dissemination of content that encourages behaviors that do not contribute anything positive?
For several years now, sports betting houses, online casinos, online bingo halls, etc. have proliferated and the money they move is growing, pushed by aggressive campaigns in all media. In a recent news read that this invasion "creates addicts to the game more and more young" and that "worries the new profile of the player, because it shows that the problems begin at younger and younger ages." Meanwhile, online gambling ads accounted for 45% of the advertising of sports radio broadcasts and 20% of advertising for a football game.
It is not uncommon to hear some conversation between teenagers in which they presume to have participated in these bets (they always win, of course, because when money is lost everyone hides it) and it would not be surprising if more than one would end up stuck. Although it is forbidden for minors to participate in games of chance, there are studies that corroborate that they play, as almost everyone knows. The self-regulation code is not enough to protect minors and vulnerable people.
The FundaciĆ³n Atenea, awarded by the FEMP in the Sixth Convening of Good Practices in Drug Addiction for a program to prevent addictions, such as alcohol and tobacco, has also been warning about this proliferation and about the number of children who play.
It may have some sense to legalize and regulate the use of online gaming platforms, since its ban does not have practical effects when users, after all, skip the restriction using websites from other countries - as was the case before-, but does not have any that are given diffusion and are allowed to influence the youngest so that each time its use is more majority. The data indicate that the enormous growth of the online game has been associated with a parallel increase in the ludopathies derived from this phenomenon.
If the advertising of tobacco and alcohol are restricted or prohibited in certain cases, with the premise that they promote harmful behavior, health problems and addictions, by the same criteria should be banned or drastically restricted gambling ads.
Thanks to its campaigns, if in 2012, the number of online gamblers was around 2 million, in 2015 it multiplied to five million, which played 8,600 million euros, 32% more than the previous year. In 2017 the amount of money wagered exceeds 12,000 million. And if all the games of chance in Spain are added, the 30,000 million would be surpassed, much more than what the State spends on unemployment.
It seems that there is some initiative in progress, but it is not seen that they are bearing much fruit. It is not understood that in a topic such as this, which would surely arouse a very broad consensus in the population, there is no progress in an effective and consistent manner.
