Toyota employees in Japan have built a robot that can score baskets like a pro.
You do not have to be Steph Curry or Lebron James to mark one basket after the other as if you were a professional. You do not even have to be human.
We introduce you to CUE, a humanoid robot trained with artificial intelligence to mark baskets. It was built by Toyota employees in Japan and was presented in B League 1, a Japanese professional male league. He played for Arvalq Tokyo and was able to "get a higher percentage of shots than any Japanese professional," according to Newsweek .
CUE has a curious story. It is based on the character Sakuragi Hanamichi of the Japanese manga comic Slam Dunk . The character fell in love with basketball after the girls rejected him.
Unfortunately, CUE is more like something out of the movie Annihilation that the human character emerged from the comics that inspired him. CUE does not even have a face.
CUE can throw 12 feet (3.6 meters) away and can make 200,000 different shots with almost perfect accuracy, thanks to their artificial intelligence training.
In a video posted on YouTube by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper , CUE wears a basketball jersey and shorts and throws baskets, leaving the professional basketball players who look from the sidelines surprised.
Basketball is not the only sport that robots have perfected. They can also ski , play football and box .
But although CUE's range of shots is considerable, his ability to defend himself on the court leaves much to be desired. CUE needs to be on a platform connected with cables and can not move freely on the court. So even though the skills to score CUE points are impressive, NBA stars like Lebron James and Steph Curry can rest easy. CUE is not going to leave you without work ... yet.
